Indian Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari is facing backlash from the public and industry experts for failing to deliver on his promise to introduce flex fuel vehicles in the country.
In 2019, Gadkari had announced plans to introduce vehicles that can run on a combination of gasoline and ethanol, known as flex fuel, by 2020. He had stated that this would not only reduce dependence on imported oil but also boost the domestic ethanol industry.
However, nearly two years later, no significant progress has been made towards the implementation of flex fuel vehicles in India. The Minister’s office has not provided any updates or explanations for the delay, leading to accusations of false promises and lack of follow-through on the part of the government.
The Indian automobile industry has been calling for the introduction of flex fuel vehicles as a way to reduce emissions and fuel costs. The use of ethanol, a biofuel made from sugarcane, is seen as a viable alternative to gasoline and can significantly reduce the country’s dependence on imported oil.
Critics of Gadkari’s broken promise have called for greater accountability and transparency from the government on this issue. They argue that the lack of progress on flex fuel vehicles is a missed opportunity for India to address both economic and environmental concerns.
